Ironic comment of the day

18 06 2008

Hillary hold-out website says:

Just Say No Deal Asks Obama Supporters To: “Show Some Class”

Tasteless Behavior Like the Booing of Public Officials Has NO Place
in Our Election Process

And they say this after their behavior at the May 31st DNC meeting.  And they never booed Obama or McCain at Clinton rallies?

I would say Ironic comment of the year, but sites like this have a propensity to produce comments like this on a regular basis.

And I’m not even sure this is as good as the Clinton supporter who said that Mrs. McCain would have divorced McCain if the c-word thing was true because “would you have stayed if your husband treated you like that.”  From a Clinton supporter.

I’ll have to keep track of all of these and create the top 10 best hit list or something at the end of the election.

Update

It gets even better:

Obama partisans should take a lesson or two in civility

This from a site that specializes in promoting vaporware attacks on Obama’s wife, says that all Obama supporters are “drinking the kool-aid” and call them “Obamabots,” and are otherwise generally racist.

Rudy: Alleged terrorists and enemy combatants should get no rights

18 06 2008

You don’t even have to be an actual terrorist or enemy combatant to be stripped of your rights now according to Rudy, you only have to be an alleged one to be shipped off to Guantanimo with no ability to actually challenge whether you should be there or not before having your show trial and being put to death.

Isn’t the definition of to allege basically “someone is accusing you of something, but we haven’t proven it yet/can’t prove it?”  So, if we haven’t actually proven that you’re a terrorist and may not have any evidence of it at all – it’s only been alleged by someone after all (and who knows by whom) – you still can’t challenge the fact that you’re being held indefinitely!  Because, you know, it’s better to hold people forever with no proof and no rights….just in case!

More Huge Polls, this time in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Florida [Updated]

18 06 2008

From Quinnipiac:

Ohio

Obama – 48 (40)
McCain – 42 (44)

Pennsylvania

Obama – 52 (46)
McCain – 40 (40)

Florida

Obama – 47 (41)
McCain – 43 (45)

In the three states, Obama leads McCain 10 to 23 percentage points among women, while men are too close to call. The Democrat trails among white voters in Florida and Ohio, but gets more than 90 percent of black voters in each state. He also has double-digit leads among young voters in each state.

The margin of error is 2.6% in Florida and Ohio and 2.5% in Pennsylvania, meaning Obama has a statistical significant lead in Pennsylvania and Ohio and is very close to one in Florida (remember that MoE can be applied to both numbers, so a 2.6% margin of error requires a lead of 5.2% to be significant).

But what is especially note worthy: look at those trends.  The best result for McCain is staying the same, which he does in Pennsylvania, while he drops 2% (within the margin of error) in Florida and Ohio.

Obama, meanwhile, Gains 8 points in Ohio, 6 points in Pennsylvania, and 6 points in Florida – all statistically significant gains.

I’ll see how these numbers will effect my electoral map when pollster.com comes out with the new averages, but I have a feeling that this will probably push Pennsylvania into the “weak obama” category and may push Florida into “Too close to call”

Update

I won’t necessarily go into specifics, but the flurry of polls released today might make the losses for McCain last week look like child’s play.  At this rate, Obama may be looking at the magical 270 electoral votes in states he leads by at least 5% in, depending on what states have polls come out.  That would be a terrible sign for McCain.

Early Thought of the Day

18 06 2008

If someone has to say “this isn’t sour grapes,” then it probably is.

Also if “I understand that Senator Clinton, periodically when she’s feeling down, launches attacks as a way of trying to boost her appeal” and “You challenge the status quo and suddenly the claws come out” are the best examples of Obama sexism these people can come up with, then I feel pretty good.

The first one isn’t sexist in the least. How many times do candidates accuse their opponent of launching attacks?  And I love the tizzy over the use of the word “periodically.”  I guess that means if I’m criticizing nerds, I should avoid the word “technically,” since, you know, the word has a part that sort of is similar to something that deals with something that the group or person I’m criticizing identifies with?  Also, personally, I use a word like “periodically” to mean basically “every now and then” even if that’s not technically the definition of the word.  I’m sure I’m not the only one.  And I guess women are the only people who can be down.  Oops, I guess not.

For the second quote, it’s not even necessarily clear that he was talking about Clinton (note: it was the press who reported it as being aimed towards Clinton, and that wasn’t even definitive) and I can’t even find the full context of the quote.  Apparently the press was all in a tizzy about possible sexism by Obama that they never bothered to provide the before and after of the quote.

And, um, you can use that phrase, even when no women are involved. (and here is an instance of someone using the phrase against Obama and Edwards in attacking Clinton. The horror!)

And here (again, targeted towards men who oppose Hillary).

Another one not involving any women (unless you count France as a woman).

Oh, and here is one about the Republicans.

Not to mention that this is probably one of the most common phrases in all of mankind – one that women don’t even necessarily seem hesitant in using.  I guess people didn’t decide to label it sexist until a male candidate used it on another candidate who happens to be female (and whose supporters believed that any attempt to keep her from winning was inherently sexist to start with).

It’s gotten to an extend that, if Obama had something like “what a hoot!” at something Clinton said, they would have called it sexist since, you know, Hoot -> Hooters -> code word for breasts. Oh my god! Sexist!

I’m sure there would be other clearly non-sexist phrases which could easily be claimed to be so if someone wanted to make a point, but I don’t feel like thinking of them at the moment.
