If someone has to say “this isn’t sour grapes,” then it probably is.
Also if “I understand that Senator Clinton, periodically when she’s feeling down, launches attacks as a way of trying to boost her appeal” and “You challenge the status quo and suddenly the claws come out” are the best examples of Obama sexism these people can come up with, then I feel pretty good.
The first one isn’t sexist in the least. How many times do candidates accuse their opponent of launching attacks? And I love the tizzy over the use of the word “periodically.” I guess that means if I’m criticizing nerds, I should avoid the word “technically,” since, you know, the word has a part that sort of is similar to something that deals with something that the group or person I’m criticizing identifies with? Also, personally, I use a word like “periodically” to mean basically “every now and then” even if that’s not technically the definition of the word. I’m sure I’m not the only one. And I guess women are the only people who can be down. Oops, I guess not.
For the second quote, it’s not even necessarily clear that he was talking about Clinton (note: it was the press who reported it as being aimed towards Clinton, and that wasn’t even definitive) and I can’t even find the full context of the quote. Apparently the press was all in a tizzy about possible sexism by Obama that they never bothered to provide the before and after of the quote.
And, um, you can use that phrase, even when no women are involved. (and here is an instance of someone using the phrase against Obama and Edwards in attacking Clinton. The horror!)
And here (again, targeted towards men who oppose Hillary).
Another one not involving any women (unless you count France as a woman).
Oh, and here is one about the Republicans.
Not to mention that this is probably one of the most common phrases in all of mankind – one that women don’t even necessarily seem hesitant in using. I guess people didn’t decide to label it sexist until a male candidate used it on another candidate who happens to be female (and whose supporters believed that any attempt to keep her from winning was inherently sexist to start with).
It’s gotten to an extend that, if Obama had something like “what a hoot!” at something Clinton said, they would have called it sexist since, you know, Hoot -> Hooters -> code word for breasts. Oh my god! Sexist!
I’m sure there would be other clearly non-sexist phrases which could easily be claimed to be so if someone wanted to make a point, but I don’t feel like thinking of them at the moment.
