McCain’s Slide

26 06 2008

While I typically don’t like writing things dealing with my Electoral Vote tracker outside of those posts, there an a disturbing trend for McCain that I’ve seen happening since I started.

Many people are well aware of how many of the battle ground states have either switched to Obama (Michigan, New Hampshire, Virginia, and, at least for the time being, Indiana) and others inching ever closer (Florida, North Carolina, and Alaska).

However, there is an equally disturbing trend for McCain: His support in his strongest states continue to erode as well.

At one point, McCain had 30%+ leads in a couple states and 20%+ leads in several more states.  After today’s Tennessee poll, while McCain still holds a healthy 15% lead in the state, he is now down to only three states where his lead is 20% or greater: Alabama, Utah, and Kentucky, worth 22 electoral votes.

In contrast, Obama has 5 states with such a large lead, totalling 35 electoral votes.  It should also be noted that Bush won by 20% or more in 13 states while Kerry won by such a margin in only 4 states.

Not only does this mean that Obama could very well improve on Kerry’s popular vote totals in those states, but that down-ticket races in those states may get a boost as well.
