Take a look at about the 2 minute mark in this video:
Romney: You know, actually in both cases you’re talking about two liberal positions: non-proliferation as well as gasoline milage. They are very much down the mainstream of what the left wing of the democratic party has been pushing for a long time…
John: Wait a minute, aren’t Republicans pushing for non-proliferation too? I’ve spent five years covering the Bush administration, that’s what they were all about.
Romney: John, there’s no question there are a number of republicans, John McCain included, who are willing to reach across the aisle and work with democrats. There’s no question, Senator Lugar and Senator Smith are showing examples like that they’re willing to work with democrats. But I’d like to see a time when Barack Obama has said that “I disagree with my party, I agree with conservatives on this issue, I’m going to reach across the aisle and work with republicans.
Let’s get the obvious thing out of the way first: I’m sure many on the right would be surprised to hear that non-proliferation is a liberal issue. And even when the anchor called Romney on what he was saying, Romney didn’t even backtrack! I mean, duh!
Second, McCain is basically known for one thing, and one thing only: McCain/Feingold. There is not much else he has “crossed over the aisle” for. To boot, much of this was 10 years ago or more. McCain/Feingold was passed 6 years ago before Obama was even in the Senate. Before complaining about how Obama hasn’t “crossed over the aisle” in his 4 years in the Senate, perhaps Romney should look to see if McCain has done so at all during that time as well, especially since McCain has recently towed the party line almost as much as any other Senator.
Mitt Romney has disappeared off the campaign trail for a couple of months now, but I’ve come across this outstanding interview in which Romney gives his perspective on why Barack Obama stands no chance at winning the General Election while also warning that McCain should appeal more to the conservative masses if he is to win the Presidency and carry those high approval ratings with him.
