If this were anything but a political ad, the Hilton and Spears lawyers could shut McCain down for unauthorized use of their images to sell himself. Obama is, I assume, dominating among the portion of the population that is star-struck, reads People magazine but not the newspaper, watches red-carpet coverage of the Oscars but not the evening news. McCain needs some way to get these people to pay attention to him. There’s also the more obvious point that this ad appeals to people who are interested in Paris and Britney.
